Making the Best of Stay-at-Home Directives

By Johnson Matandi

Towards the end of 2019, an epidemic broke out in Wuhan, a commercial town in Central China’s Hubei province. It turned out to be Coronavirus. The viral disease soon spread its tentacles to reach and ravage the whole world.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially called it a pandemic. It was the first time WHO had upgraded an epidemic to a pandemic since the “swine flu” H1N1 in 2009. The name of the virus has metamorphosed to the novel coronavirus, Coronavirus COVID-19 or simply COVID-19.

In this grim period of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic ravages, most national and local governments the world over have initiated partial or total lockdowns. The majority of the workforce is therefore working from home or staying at home. How (else) then should you utilize the stay-at-home period?

All day’s work without play makes Jack a dull boy, so the saying goes. Whether you are working from home or just staying at home, develop workout regimes. This will keep you healthy and raise your immunity levels. Involve the ones you stay with – spouse/partner, kids, etc. Unlike the other recommendations listed below, exercising is not optional, if you want to keep fit.

Home Chores

Carry out those simple tasks that you would ordinarily call professional service providers to do, like painting, lawn mowing, gardening, car-washing, etc. If you are not sure how to do a certain task, google it, but make sure to leave the complex ones to the experts.

Engage the Kids

If you have kids, create games for them to play and if possible join them. Unlike adults, kids can remain extremely active throughout the day. Do not neglect them yet they are supposed to remain indoors too.

Read or Write

There is that story you have always wanted to write but there has never been time; write it. Read that Bible, novel, your history, anything. There are so many “How To” articles online – read them. Think of what you can do and there are a myriad things.

Don’t Get Carried Away

Of course the real reason why you are away from your daily activities is to keep away from COVID-19. Don’t forget that! Keep your environment clean and observe all the government and healthcare professionals’ guidelines – they are meant to keep you safe and away from COVID-19.

Stay safe and healthy – Good luck.
